Opening the body from outer ankle to fingertips this is a huge side stretch that feels good to spend some time in! The unexpected benefit of this pose is that sometimes the side that feels the most relief is not the side being stretched.
How to do the Half Moon Side Stretch:
- With your partner lying on their back, lift their feet and move them over a foot or so; lay them down, crossing at the ankles.
- Whichever side you took your partner’s feet toward, make sure that arm is lying by their side.
- Take the other arm up toward their head.
- Side by their head and hold their forearm.
- Place your foot on the opposite shoulder.
- Push with your foot while pulling their arm to create a side stretch.
Benefits: Releases the side body fascia and top of shoulder.
Cautions: There is a big pull on the arm here, make sure your partner’s shoulder and wrist are ok with it.
Counter-Poses: After such a big asymmetrical stretch, a symmetrical pose will help the body reconcile itself back into wholeness. The Shoulder Press, Cobra Pose and any other symmetrical or soothing poses can be a nice counter-pose.
This pose is similar to the Half Moon Pose in yoga. I often like to add this reclining version to my yoga practice to really focus on the side stretch… lie down on your back, crossing your ankles to one side. Take the arm of the long side of your body by your ear and stretch that side even longer as you pull your shoulder blade down your back. At the same time, lengthen the inside line of your legs and keep your weight even on your bottom and both sides of your low back equi-distant from the floor. Mmmm, yummy! To go a little deeper, move your shoulders over toward the same side as your feet.
This can also be nice as a completely passive Yin pose. And its a good experiment to see if you can find the same sort of opening while in the more traditional standing Half Moon Pose. But, that’s a post for another time.
