The Gulpha Marma is an Ayurvedic pressure point often used in Thai Yoga Massage. Like most pressure point, it has a host of benefits! On the surface, it directly affects the mobility of the ankle and circulation into the foot. On a deeper level, its connections are far reaching in the body. It can help with a host of ailments in the belly, from adrenal issues to kidney function. As well, it is tied to reducing back pain, controlling edema and revitalizing the entire lower body. And most of all, it helps to reduce pain throughout the body.
How do you know that working this marma will be helpful. First, know that it is almost always helpful! But, it will have the most far-reaching effects on those for whom this spot is sensitive (so proceed gently).
How to work the Gulpha Marma (and thumb Sen Kalathari on top of the foot):
- Do this one foot at a time with your partner lying on their back.
- Your fingers rest on the sole of the foot to provide support, while the thumbs do the work on the top of the foot.
- Press your thumbs into the hollow on the top of the ankle.
- Press from here to the big toe and pinky toe at the same time, using one thumb to press along each line. Return the thumbs to the hollow and then press along the lines to the second and fourth toes. Finish by pressing the line from the hollow to the middle toe.
Benefits: Releases tension in the sole of the foot and ankle; improves circulation; stimulates Sen lines and Marma points on the top of the foot. Pressure to the Gulpha Marma point is also a natural pain reliever and helps release stiffness and fatigue in the legs.
Cautions: Be gentle if this point is sensitive.
